Advanced Magnetic Field Design Suite :: Overview

Advanced Magnetic Field Design Suite for 2D/3D design of magnets and permanent-magnet devices, including saturation effects in soft magnetic materials.

The Advanced Magnetic Field Design Suite includes Magnum, Geometer, MetaMesh, Mesh and PerMag. The Basic package runs on 32 and 64-bit Windows computers. The Professional version features unlimited memory access and parallel-processing on 64-bit, multicore machines.

Magnum is a complete tool for 3D finite-element magnetostatic calculations. The program achieves unprecendented accuracy and speed at a moderate price.

Magnum can perform three types of calculations:
1) free-space fields in unbounded volumes for given applied currents,
2) bounded fields in the presence of coils, permanent magents and saturable isotropic ferromagnetic materials and
3) pulsed fields in regions with ideal conductors.

Magnum includes two additional programs:

MagView (a postprocessor for 2D/3D plots and analyses).

Magnum has extensive applications to the design of magnets (with and without iron) and permanent magnet assemblies.

Magnum applies finite-element techniques to find magnetostatic fields in arbitrary threedimensional systems. The program can include effects of applied currents, permanent magnets, linear ferromagnetic materials and ideal conducting boundaries for pulsed fields. The MagWinder utility is used to define drive coils of any geometry. The program can operate in two modes:
  • Bounded finite-element solutions, including the effects of ferromagnetic or conducting materials.
  • Unbounded free-space fields resulting from a specified distribution of currents.
Three programs are included in Magnum:

MAGNUM.EXE The main solution program to determine one or more magnetostatic solutions in a window or under batch file control.
MAGWINDER.EXE An interactive, graphical utility to define applied currents and to create standard files of current elements.
MAGVIEW.EXE A postprocessor to generate plots and to analyze solutions from Magnum.

MetaMesh (the AMaze conformal mesh generator {included in this package}) is required to create geometry files for solutions.Magnum features fast and accurate calculations in random-access memory. The programs use dynamic memory allocation; therefore, the size of the solution is limited only by the installed RAM. A computer with 2 GB of memory can handle over 10 million elements.

MetaMesh is a versatile, fast and easy-to-learn program to create conformal 3D meshes for finite-element calculations. In a conformal mesh, elements are individually shaped to match object boundaries. The faithful representation of surfaces and the extended node coupling of the hexahedron mesh account for the high accuracy of AMaze programs. The MetaMesh script is a simple and well-documented format for the definition of arbitrary three-dimensional structures. You can use the Geometer program (included with the package) to create scripts in an interactive, graphical environment. MetaMesh has the unique capability to create ideal structured meshes of conformal elements for top speed in finite-element solutions.

The MetaMesh/Geometer package is the core of the AMaze series of three-dimensional finite-element programs. The function of the programs is to divide solution spaces into conformal, hexahedron1 elements to match system geometries that you specify. There are two reasons why finite-element calculations always begin with the process of mesh generation:
  • The shapes and material identities of the elements encode information on the geometry of the physical system.
  • Dividing the solution space into small pieces makes it possible to convert the continuous differential equations that govern field variations into a set of coupled linear equations that can be solved on a digital computer.
Geometer is an interactive program with a graphical interface. In the program you can construct complex objects as you move freely through three-dimensional space with advanced visualization tools. The end product is a text script of information that describes the geometry. MetaMesh analyzes the script and divides space into a set of conformal elements with unique material identities. The output file of MetaMesh provides geometric information to the AMaze solution programs (HiPhi, Magnum, OmniTrak, RFE3 and HeatWave) or the GamBet Monte-Carlo program. You can also use Geometer/MetaMesh as a stand-alone package to create meshes for your own finite-element programs.

Although we live in a three-dimensional world, describing precise three-dimensional structures is a challenging process. Three-dimensional simulations take careful planning and methodical work. Within this constraint, we believe that the MetaMesh/Geometer package offers unparalleled ease-of-use and a minimum of frustration. Geometer has several unique features:
  • Employs OpenGL to give you sense of being inside the system with complete freedom to move about. The program also offers a variety of orthographic views for precision work.
  • Has an extensive set of interactive dialogs that you can use to add, to modify or to reorder parts in a few seconds.
  • Includes an interactive two-dimensional CAD system to specify cross-sections of extrusions and turnings.
In comparison to other available mesh generators, MetaMesh has the following advantages:
  • The input script constitutes a readable and succinct format to record generalized threedimensional geometries. The script gives you complete access to input information – you can directly create or modify scripts with an editor.
  • The operational strategy is to create complex objects step-by-step from simple parts. The activity of fabricating, orienting and positioning parts is similar to the process of building an assembly in a machine shop.
  • Features direct import of complex solids from three-dimensional CAD programs like Solid- Works, ProE, AutoCAD and NX through STL files.
  • Has advanced capabilities to integrate non-mechanical objects. The program can generate parts with arbitrary surfaces that are specified mathematically or numerically. The program can also represent biological systems by direct conversion of voxel data sets (such as MRI scans) in Analyze format.
  • Generates unique structured conformal three-dimensional meshes, giving top speed in solution programs.
  • Powerful block operations enable you to paste standard assemblies into a script, moving and rotating the collection of parts as a group.
  • Open and well-documented output formats.
  • Comprehensive visualization features for checking the accuracy and integrity of meshes.
  • Runs in the interactive mode or autonomously under batch file control.
  • Incorporates extensive error checking and element correction routines.


Automatic generation of conformal triangular meshes

Mesh creates conformal triangular meshes for any user- specified geometry. The term conformal means that the solution volume is divided into a set of individually-shaped triangles that closely follow material boundaries (even with slanted or curved surfaces). The approach gives high-accuracy field solutions with short run times.


The program also supports variable element resolution for enhanced accuracy in critical regions. Mesh includes a powerful, integrated drawing editor to define geometries graphically. The program also imports drawings in DXF format from TurboCAD, AutoCAD and other drafting programs. Mesh can operate interactively or from the command prompt under batch file control. In the interactive mode, you can make detailed inspections of the mesh or change the properties of individual elements and vertices.

Two-dimensional magnetostatics with non-linear magnetic materials, drive coils, permanent magnet and anisotropic materials.

PerMag Permag is an advanced solution package for the design of electromagnets and permanent magnet devices. The program calculates static magnetic fields for any geometry with planar or cylindrical symmetry.

Permag can perform combined runs with permanent magnets, coils and ferromagnetic materials. With its open data structure, the program handles all permanent magnet materials, including non-linear materials like Alnico. A concise users' manual reviews magnetostatic theory with anisotropic materials and numerical methods for field solutions. The program features an interactive graphical enviroment to create a variety of plots. Analysis capabilities include automatic determination of field energy, forces and induced current for inductance calculations. Compatible with all versions of Windows. (Mesh is required for PerMag. (Mesh is included in this package)).
